Fishy Business

Why The Fishy Business Book

The headlines, news articles, and textbooks are full of positive effects of fish oil supplementation. However, if you dig a little bit deeper you will be surprised to find alternative views supported by numerous studies. Even the respected JAMA published a review stating, why people take fish oils when there is little evidence. They stated;

“Sales of ω-3 FAs steadily increased despite contemporaneous accrual of high-level evidence that the supplements lack efficacy across a range of health outcomes for which their use is advocated”

To show 1 example of why fish oils can cause havoc on your body, let’s have a look at 4-hydroxyhexanal (HHE). HHE is a small molecule broken from fish oils that are found in many pathologies. see the video

The book “Fishy Business” was written to create an argument against taking fish oils. Many people take fish oils for general health and non-specific reasons. Consumers taking fish oils are not warned about the negative side effects. One common side effects of fish oils are their rancidity. Even though manufacturers mask the smell to avoid the senses, rancidity is often noted.

Barry Halliwell, one of the most cited researchers in the world studying fish oil supplements typically found amounts of 20-30% of lipid peroxides in fish oil supplements. Lipid peroxides are a marker for rancidity. Studies with rats show that these oxidized lipids can be taken up just like non-oxidized fats and incorporated into the different lipoproteins. These lipoproteins with oxidized fats can contribute to heart disease and many other pathologies.
